charity of the week: Pilgrims Hospices

Pilgrims Hospices is a charity which provides palliative care free of charge to people in east Kent. We provide care for patients with a range of illnesses that cannot be cured including cancer, heart failure, respiratory conditions and neurological diseases. Care is provided from the three sites in Canterbury, Ashford and Thanet, in patients' homes and via community programmes. Care is also extended to families and carers through a dedicated team of social workers, counsellors, family support managers and chaplains based at each hospice site.

This year Pilgrims celebrates 30 years of hospice care in east Kent. As part of our anniversary celebrations, from 12th - 22nd May, four Pilgrims Hospices cyclists will take part in Tour30, travelling between 30 hospices in the UK and covering over 650 miles over 10 days. The team which includes staff members, a volunteer and a trustee, will be cycling during Dying Matters week and aims to raise awareness of hospice care nationally.

The Tour30 team will also be taking pieces of artwork which have been produced by Pilgrims patients and will be exchanging them for pieces of artwork from the hospices that they visit along the way.

To follow the progress of Tour30 you can follow them on twitter @Tour_30. If you would like to sponsor them please Text Tour30 £3 to 70700.

To keep delivering care to those that need it the most, Pilgrims has to raise in excess of £9 million each year. Over 75% of our funding comes from the local community and we work closely with local businesses and individuals to support them in their fundraising. We spend over 80 pence in every £1 directly on patient care.

We rely on over 1500 volunteers which keeps our staff costs low and enables our services to be provided free of charge to our patients and their families and carers.
